Kechara Soup Kitchen is a Community Action Group, which consists of volunteers from all walks of life distributing food to the homeless and urban poor in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Every week, come rain or shine, a group of volunteers gather in the centre of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to distribute halal food and offer first aid to the homeless. When sponsorship allows, we also distribute umbrellas during the wet seasons.
From distributing 20 packs of food when we first started, we are now able to distribute around 130 packs of food. This is due to the generous sponsorship from kind donors, who often join us to distribute to the needy. Our giving to all, regardless of race, gender, religion or culture is the basis of our motto: Hunger Knows No Barriers.
Our medium term goal is to have a permanent SOUP KITCHEN in a building in the centre of town, as near as possible to the urban poor, so we can provide food, shelter and counseling to empower the homeless to regain dignity and become employable and independent. To achieve this, we also have a long term goal to create a NURTURE CENTRE.
To achieve this, we need help - any contributions are welcome, whether in financial donations or volunteering your time, skills or resources. Talk to us today!
Please join us on our journey...

NEWS: report on food distribution
26 Oct - A total of 58 packs of food were given out to Chow Kit, Tiong Nam, TAR, Masjid Jamek, Jalan Sultan and Petaling Street.
Hugo, Nicholas and Chan Hong went to the usual routes while Justin Cheah went to Sentul and Kg. Baru to look for more homeless and he found 14 of them.
They will split into 2 teams next week in view of this. They finished around 2.15am.
19 Oct - We started at 5.30pm with 22 volunteers (including 6 kids) which were divided into 4 teams.
Adrian led Team A consisting of Phoebe and Cynthia who distributed 15 packs of food in the Pudu Market area.
Team B was led by Justin Ripley followed by Julia, Julia's kids, Ruby, Patsy, Sharon together with a reporter from Kosmo which gave 35 packs around Petaling Street, Klang Bus Station, and Post Office.
Team C headed by Prof Choi flanked by Suzan, Karen and Peng Ki went to serve 20 packs in Green House, Puduraya and Maybank Bus Stop.
Team D headed by Justine Cheah led Nicholas, Matthieu (Margaret's son) with his 3 other classmates, Oliver, Jin and Kieron gave 10 packs of food.
Later all teams teamed up again in front of Bangkok Bank which gave away 45 packs. Clients have increased at the Bangkok Bank area but many were not the homeless. We finished at 6.45pm.
Midnight round - 75 packs of food were given out (Chow Kit 30 packs, TAR 17 packs, Masjid Jamek area 11 packs and Petaling Street 17 packs). It was raining heavily, only Nicholas and Justine Cheah set out their usual rounds and finished at around 1.35am.
29 Sept - The KSK midnight round, which gave out 55 packets of food, finished by 3am this morning. The team has Nicholas, Hugo, Chan Hong, Selen and his friend Guru (who is a lawyer), led by Justin Cheah.
Traffic on the street was busy because of the Hari Raya festivities. Some regulars were not around but the team found more new people. The regulars recognized the team by the color of the plastic bag they carried. In the future, they will recognize us by our KSK vest!
Selen explained to Guru about KSK. Guru felt it was much more meaningful to give directly to the homeless than just donating into the donation box.
KSK was inspired by Rinpoche years ago, but has inspired a lot of kind people who sincerely cared and who really want to do something hands-on for the community.
29 Sept - KSK had 24 volunteers of which 4 are first timers, including Jack from Australia, Nicholas who joined last week night round, Serena (Kelvin's friend from Singapore) and Hugo from Kepong (Justin Cheah's good friend). From our regulars, we have Prof Choi, Su Ming, Joy, Justin Ripley, Justin Cheah, Suzan, Margaret and her son, Matt, Dr. Chong, Mellisa and Karen.
Today 154 packs of food (of which 40 were hot food) were given out to the homeless on the day rounds.
Dr. Chong went on the road with Adrian and Phoebe to check out this old man who has cataract problem spotted by Ruby last week on the Pudu market round.
