EVENING ROUNDS (Sunday 28th December @ 1600 hrs)
We have 23 volunteers this week. The weather was moody, cloudy and it drizzled during the whole round. We have started to register the clients for our records in order for us to get to know our clients better and also to get to know what type of help they need.
Both the food distribution and interview process went on smoothly though a few of them refused our interview. Most of the interviewed clients were either aged, staying on their own, jobless or without identification cards.
Some of our regular clients were not at their usual places probably due to the rain and heavy traffic.
There were no untoward incidents at all the areas we covered. We finished the evening rounds at about 7.45pm.
MIDNIGHT ROUNDS (28th December 2008) 2330 hrs
99 packs were given out to the homeless. 5 of us volunteered that night. The streets were quiet and most of our regulars were not at their usual spots as we were told by others that there were constant raids conducted by the police.
Justin Cheah and Veronica met with an Indian guy named Karsu who was robbed of his mykad, money and belongings a few months back in Brickfields. He was forced to sleep on the streets and currently works as an odd job worker and he couldn't get a permanent job due to not having a mykad. He could not afford the cost of a replacement and this is the first time Karsu had lost his mykad. We have decided to help him by getting his mykad reissued again coming this Wednesday. He was very thankful to us.
There was another case where a male client ignored us and just walked away although we told him that we are giving him food and clearly showed him the packet of food. He was a very skinny man in his 30s.
Food distribution went smoothly without any untoward situations and we finished our rounds at about 2.00am.

One of our regular clients, a man with a red cap and who always wears blue coloured shorts was very helpful during the food distribution in Bangkok Bank. He had asked for another extra packet of food towards the end as a token for his hard work. As there was no more left, he was offered a bottle of mineral water instead. He is known as an emotional person, threw away the mineral water bottle and swore at us but did not hit anyone of the volunteers. We left the place ignoring him as we thought it was not the best time to talk to him.

Clients Interviewed
1) Mr. Veerasingam (51) has been trying to look for a job. He lost his job and family because of alcoholism for over 30 years which subsequently ruined his life. He regrets it and would work for whatever job if someone can provide him food and shelter although with low pay.
2) The team managed to follow up on the Indian lady they found last week while talking to Mr. Chan. Saraswati (46) has 7 children from her 2 previous marriages, took drugs because she was influenced by her late husband, a drug addict. She ran away from home because of her addiction and was forced into prostitution in order to survive. She dropped back into drugs a few months after she was discharged from drugs rehabilitation center. Apart from this, she also has heart and asthma problems.
3) Chai Kim Siong (42) who was an amputee. He has lost his right leg because of drugs abuse for over 20 years. He is also suffering from HIV AIDS. He is currently surviving from allowance of RM300 per month from the Ministry of Welfare and selling aluminum tin cans.
EVENING ROUNDS (Sunday 7th December @ 1730 hrs)
282 packs of food were distributed to the homeless and urban poor. We have 16 volunteers this week. The weather was cloudy and we have a new volunteer named Ms. Phang who came to know us at our KSK booth at the Chinese Assembly Hall. She was very impressed with our work and volunteered herself immediately to join us upon knowing we're preparing to go out for our rounds. Many regulars were not there as it was raining during distribution time.
We have fine tuned the ticketing system this week to counter the pushing crowd problem. The early numbers were given to handicapped, elderly and female clients first. Food distribution was done smoothly and order was maintained as all the clients waited patiently for their numbers to be announced. Most of the clients were familiar faces and were very grateful for our food and the implementation of this ticketing system. They even kindly requested empty boxes as their makeshift rubbish bins so as to not dirty up the place.
